Ashley Waits (13:00)
The Wingman Project is a series of videos based on actual case studies of suicidal airmen after returning from Iraq, and depictions of their behavior that could be danger signs if you see them in a family member or friend.

INT. ASHLEY'S HOUSE, BEDROOM - NIGHT
A darkened room, late.
ASHLEY WAITES, 24, tosses and turns, awake. Restless.
On the other pillow lies a telephone. She picks it up and
looks at it.
She puts the phone back on the pillow and turns and looks at
the clock on the nightstand: 3:42 a.m.
She tries to go to sleep. She's frustrated.

INT. ASHLEY'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Ashley looks at her watch: 8:35. She looks at the phone on
the coffee table.
Picks it up.
ASHLEY
(shouting at phone)
Come on. You said 7 o'clock. It
is-past-7-o-clock!
She throws the phone down, hard. She collapses on the floor.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
(continuing; defeated)
Please. Please.

EXT. ASHLEY'S HOUSE, DRIVEWAY - DAY
Ashley is sitting in her car. Staring straight ahead,
catatonic.
JANE, her best friend, 24, walks up and sees her.
JANE
Hey.
Ashley sees Jane, gets out of the car. There is no light in
Ashley's eyes.
ASHLEY
Oh, hi.
Jane notices she looks haggard.
JANE
What's the matter?
ASHLEY
Nothing.
JANE
You look like hell.
ASHLEY
No, I'm okay.
(off Jane's look)
I hate this. I hate every
[fucking] thing about it.
JANE
Jim just got deployed. You're
going to have to figure how to
deal.
ASHLEY
He said he'd call this morning at 7
o'clock. He didn't. He could be
dead for all I know.
JANE
You know they can't guarantee when
they're gonna call. Something
probably came up.
ASHLEY
I don't care. I just want to hear
from him and that he's [fucking]
okay. I'm going crazy not knowing
what's going on.
Jane pulls her to her and hugs her.
JANE
He's okay. They're all looking out
for each other over there.
Ashley starts crying.
ASHLEY
This is my life, now. I hate it.
JANE
You know, I worry about Steve, too,
but they're both going to be okay.
ASHLEY
Yeah.

INT. ASHLEY'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - DAY
Ashley is on the phone. She is shaking she's so excited.
ASHLEY
So glad to hear that it's going
good. And you're eating well.
That's important.
JIM
(on phone)
I probably should wrap up soon. I
think I only have about a minute or
so left. But it sure is good to
hear your voice.
(beat)
I love you.
ASHLEY
Hmmm mmmm.
She starts to cry.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
(continuing; her voice
quivers)
I love you, too.
JIM
(on phone)
Ash, you okay?
ASHLEY
Uh, yea... I have to remember to
keep busy, that's all.
JIM
(on phone)
You sure?
Ashley doesn't answer.
JIM (CONT'D)
Alright, well listen, I'll be safe.
I'm thinking of you, babe. I'll
try and call you Thursday around...
The phone goes dead.
ASHLEY
Around when?
(whimpering)
Please. Please.
She curls up into a ball and cries.

EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - AFTERNOON
Ashley jogs in jeans and a t-shirt. Fast, determined. She's
not a runner. She has no form. She's just burning energy.
JIM (V.O.)
Jane, it's Jim. Listen, I can't
talk long. I'm using my buddy's
minutes, but can you check on Ash?
I talked to her earlier and she
seems like she's really down.
JANE (V.O.)
Sure. I'll go over and see how
she's doing.

INT. ASHLEY'S HOUSE, KITHCEN - AFTERNOON
Ashley sits with a sandwich in front of her on a plate.
She stares straight ahead, not touching it.
She picks it up, smells it, grimaces, then puts it down and
pushes it away.

INT. ASHLEY'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - EVENING
Ashley lies on the couch. The phone is held tight, close to
her.
The doorbell rings.
Jane is at the door. Sees Ashley lying on the couch.
There's a bottle of rum on the table, plus some pill bottles.
Jane notices them.
Jane knocks on the door.
JANE
Hello? You really sleeping?
Ashley stirs.
She puts the phone down on the coffee table as she gets up.
JANE (CONT'D)
What'cha doing? Catnap?
ASHLEY
Me, sleep? That's a joke.
Jane hugs her. Ashley is unresponsive, arms at her side.
JANE
Ash, you okay?
ASHLEY
Yeah, just tired. Tired of all
this shit in my life.
JANE
I mean okay, okay? Like you seem
pretty depressed the last couple of
times I've seen you.
ASHLEY
Just haven't been feeling so good.
My stomach's been...
JANE
What?
ASHLEY
Just been feeling bleeeeccchh.
Jane looks her in the eye. Ashley's eyes are empty.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
(continuing; getting
irritated)
What do you want from me? I hate
my life, okay. I want it all to
stop. To be over.
JANE
What's that mean?
ASHLEY
Stop bugging me. Go away. Leave
me alone, okay?
Ashley turns from her, picks up the liquor bottle and moves
it out of sight.
JANE
No, talk to me.
ASHLEY
About what?
(beat)
Ok, I'm tired of feeling like shit.
I can't sleep.
(beat)
I can't do anything. Who cares?
What's any of it matter?
JANE
What are you talking about? Why
aren't you sleeping?
ASHLEY
(yelling)
I DON'T KNOW!
(takes a breath)
All I do is lie awake, worried
about him, and I...and I hate it
all. I don't want to eat. I can't
focus on anything. I'm screwing up
at work. I can't go on like this.
(softly, choking up)
It's unbearable.
JANE
He's okay, you know. He's going to
be okay.
ASHLEY
You don't know that!
Ashley walks away. Jane follows her.
JANE
This is tough to say to you but I
love you, so I'm gonna.
She takes Ashley's hands in hers.
ASHLEY
Please no more. Just stop, let me
be.
JANE
Have you thought of killing
yourself?
Ashley pulls away from her. She slumps down on the couch.
JANE (CONT'D)
You can tell me. You can tell me
anything.
Jane motions to the pill bottles on the side table next to
the couch.
JANE (CONT'D)
I know you're not on any
medication. So, what's with them?
ASHLEY
I want to make it stop.
JANE
Tell me what you mean.
Jane sits and listens actively.
ASHLEY
I'm worried sick all the time. My
stomach is in knots.
(beat)
I'm numb. I can't move.
(under her breath)
I'm as good as dead.
JANE
Tell me, have you thought about
killing yourself?
There's a pause, then Ashley starts to cry. She wipes her
eyes with her hand and tries to stay strong.
ASHLEY
But I'm okay now.
Jane gets up, reaches for the pill boxes and pockets them,
then sits next to Ashley and puts her arm around her.
JANE
I'm here with you, you know.
ASHLEY
I know.
JANE
I'm going to call the chaplain and
have him meet us.
ASHLEY
What do you mean?
JANE
I'm going with you--we'll go talk
to him about what you're feeling.
ASHLEY
No way. I'm not going.
(beat)
I'm fine now.
JANE
It's okay. Everything you say is
completely confidential. You're
having a hard time with this and
talking to a professional will help
you.
ASHLEY
No! I don't want anyone to know
about this. I shared it with you,
but that's it.
JANE
You can keep making up excuses, but
you are too important to not talk
to someone about this.
ASHLEY
But I can't afford it. Since Jim
and I aren't married, I have no
benefits. You know how much
therapists charge?
JANE
(beat)
This is covered even if you're not
married. It won't cost you a
thing.
Jane waits for her decision.
JANE (CONT'D)
Ash, c'mon. We're going. You mean
too much to me. And to Jim and your
family.
(touches her face, wipes
away her tears)
Now, you know the chaplain, but you
can decide. Besides him, there's
the hospital, we can call your
doctor, wherever you want to go,
but we're going go take care of
this.
ASHLEY
You want me to tell someone I've
been thinking like that?
JANE
It's okay. The situation we're in
is ridiculously stressful, and
we're only human. Things sometimes
get crazy in our heads. But
there's help out there. C'mon.
Ashley looks away, defeated.
JANE (CONT'D)
We'll do it together.
ASHLEY
Okay.
Jane smiles.
She hugs Ashley.
INT. JANE'S CAR - EVENING
Jane's car pulls away from the curb.
Jane has her arm around her friend's shoulder as they drive
away.
EXT. ROAD - EVENING
Jane's car heads down the road.
JANE (V.O.)
(on phone)
Chaplain, it's Jane Lennard. I'm
on my way to the base with Ashley
Waites, Jim Snyder's girlfriend.
We'd like to come by and talk.
(beat)
Okay, thanks. See you shortly.
The car continues down the road.
JANE (CONT'D)
I love you, Ash. I wouldn't want
to think of a world without you.
The car disappears into the distance.

“The literal definition of a Wingman is best personified by the Pardo Push, a story recounted by former CSAF Moseley in 2007.”
